SUMMARY:eTown Taping with Robyn Hitchcock and Special Guest
DESCRIPTION:With a career now spanning six decades\, Robyn Hitchcock remains a truly one-of-a-kind artist – surrealist rock ‘n’ roller\, iconic troubadour\, guitarist\, poet\, painter and performer. An unparalleled\, deeply individualistic songwriter and stylist\, Robyn has traversed many genres with humor\, intelligence and originality over 30 albums and seemingly infinite live performances. \nFrom The Soft Boys’ proto-psych-punk and The Egyptians’ Dadaist pop to solo masterpieces like 1984’s milestone I Often Dream of Trains and 1990’s Eye\, Robyn has crafted a strikingly original oeuvre rife with sagacious observation\, astringent wit\, recurring marine life\, mechanized rail services\, cheese\, Clint Eastwood and innumerable finely drawn characters\, real and imagined. \nBorn in London in 1953\, Robyn attended Winchester College before moving to Cambridge in 1974. He began playing in a series of bands\, including Dennis and the Experts\, which became The Soft Boys in 1976. Though light years away from first-wave punk’s revolutionary clatter\, the band still manifested the era’s spirit of DIY independence with their breakneck reimagining of British psychedelia. During their (first) lifetime\, The Soft Boys released two albums\, among them 1980’s landmark second LP\, Underwater Moonlight. “The term ‘classic’ is almost as overused as ‘genius’ and ‘influential\,’” declared Rolling Stone upon the album’s 2001 reissue. “But Underwater Moonlight remains all three of those descriptions.” \nRobyn began his solo career with 1981’s Black Snake Diamond Röle\, affirming his knack for eccentric insight and surrealist lyrical hijinks. 1984’s I Often Dream of Trains fused that approach with autumnal acoustic arrangements\, deepening the emotional range of his songcraft. Robyn Hitchcock and The Egyptians were born that same year and immediately lit up college rock playlists with albums like 1986’s Element of Light. He signed to A&M Records in 1987 and earned early alternative hits with “Balloon Man” and “Madonna of the Wasps.” Robyn returned to his dark acoustic palette with 1990’s equally masterful Eye before joining the Warner Bros label for a succession of acclaimed albums\, including 1996’s Moss Elixir and 1999’s Jewels For Sophia. \nHaving first reunited for a brief run of shows in 1994\, The Soft Boys came together for a second go-around in 2001\, releasing Nextdoorland to universal applause. Robyn joined the Yep Roc label in 2004\, embracing collaboration with friends and like-minded artists such as The Venus 3 (Peter Buck\, Scott McCaughey and Bill Rieflin)\, Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings (2004’s Spooked) and legendary producer Joe Boyd (2014’s The Man Upstairs). \nRobyn moved to Nashville in 2015\, where he quickly found a place among the Music City community\, recording 2017’s self-titled Robyn Hitchcock and 2022’s Shufflemania! Indeed\, Robyn has proven an irrepressible collaborator throughout his long career\, teaming with a boundless series of fellow artists over the years\, including R.E.M.\, Andy Partridge\, Brendan Benson\, Johnny Marr\, Sean Ono Lennon\, Grant-Lee Phillips\, Jon Brion\, The Decemberists\, Norwegian pop combo I Was A King and Yo La Tengo to name but a few. \nAlong with his musical efforts\, Robyn has appeared in several films\, among them collaborations with the late Jonathan Demme on 1998’s concert documentary Storefront Hitchcock and roles in 2004’s The Manchurian Candidate and 2008’s Rachel Getting Married. An inveterate traveller and live performer\, Robyn has toured nearly constantly for the past four decades\, playing countless shows worldwide\, from Africa to the Arctic. \nHis memoir 1967: How I Got There and Why I Never Left was published on June 28\, 2024.\nWith every eTown ticket purchase\, you’re supporting the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. eTown donates $1 per ticket to Conscious Alliance\, aiding hunger relief\, youth programs and sustainable solutions for the Oglala Lakota Nation.

SUMMARY:eTown Presents DUG
DESCRIPTION:There’s a natural magnetism to DUG’s folk brew. The duo\, made up of Conor (Lorkin) O’Reilly and Jonny Pickett\, are gearing up for the release of their debut album\, having formed in 2023–but you’d be forgiven for believing that they’ve been writing together for a lifetime. \nTheir music stems from roots in musical traditions spanning both sides of the pond. In one breath\, echoing the great American folk troubadours\, and in another\, comfortably channelling the elder statesmen of Irish folk. \nThis is no accident. DUG have a shared musical heritage\, with members having been born in America and Scotland before arriving in Ireland. O’Reilly himself spent almost a decade making and releasing music in upstate New York\, having picked up sticks from his native Edinburgh\, (Irish mother and Scottish father) before moving to Ireland in 2022 to start a new musical chapter. \nAnd you can hear that lived musical experience in singles like ‘Big Sundown’ and ‘Jubilee’ (shortlisted for two Grammy nominations). Resonator guitar and banjo\, the building blocks of DUG’s arrangements\, lick and spin\, with intricate finger-picking patterns whirling to a compelling whole. Their music breathes\, vamping in sync. \nThey’re damn funny too. DUG’s lyrics catch you off guard\, eliciting an honest-to-goodness chuckle in a moment of levity. At their very best\, as on their forthcoming album\, there’s a bona fide warmth littered throughout their unique take on folk storytelling. Tracks like ‘Wheel of Fortune’ have an easy rapport. It’s catching up with an old friend\, all mischief and smiles. \nThere are allusions to darker moments there too; yearning and melancholy\, to lessons learnt the hard way. Taking the heavy with the light\, and being able to translate it into a foot-tapping\, infectious contemporary folk sound is what DUG do best. They don’t need to posture; their music is naturally playful and honest\, inviting you along on their musical journey. \nDUG’s love for the musicians that inspired them never steps too far into reverence. They’re an unapologetically modern band. You’ll hear plenty of Irish influence in their music\, but you’ll not find any tweed coats or paddy caps here. Instead\, the band opts to be themselves-completely natural and organic. It’s part of what gives the group’s work such a strong charisma\, and helps establish DUG as having one of the most unique takes on contemporary folk music. \nIn 2024\, the duo signed to Claddagh Records\, a label in which they find themselves in fine musical company. A subsidiary of Universal Records\, Claddagh Records has spent the last few years becoming a hotbed for some of the most forward-thinking musicians in contemporary Irish folk\, home to artists like Niamh Bury\, Lemoncello\, and ØXN\, to name a few. \nIt should come as no surprise that a group that delights in a touch of devilment and so ardently remains true to themselves has built a thriving community of fans\, both at their live shows and through their often hilarious social media. \nOn that note\, beyond the release of their debut album\, DUG will spend much of 2025 on the road with plans for an extensive international tour.

SUMMARY:Roderick Sewell -- "Iron Will"
DESCRIPTION:Roderick Sewell will speak about and sign his new book\, “Iron Will: An Amputee’s Journey to Athletic Excellence\,” on Wednesday\, January 28th at 6:30pm\, at Boulder Bookstore. Tickets for this event are $5 (plus a small processing fee) and are available on Eventbrite. \nAbout the Book:\nRoderick Sewell II was born without the tibia in both of his legs. Before he turned two years old\, his mother\, Marian\, made the tough choice to have his legs amputated so that he could continue wrestling with his cousins and climbing his grandmother’s good furniture. But when Marian’s modest income couldn’t cover the prosthetics Roderick needed to attend school\, she made another impossible decision: to leave her job so that California Children’s Services would pay for Roderick’s prosthetic legs. \nRoderick and his mother were left homeless\, keeping their long stays in shelters a secret while he learned to swim at the YMCA. All the while\, Marian instilled in Roderick the lessons of gratitude\, love\, and patience to build his confidence in his disability\, his identity as a Black boy\, and his true passion\, sports. \nRoderick was still homeless when he met coaches from the Challenged Athletes Foundation. They gave him his running legs\, and his life quickly changed for the better. He learned how to challenge his body to become a fierce competitor and athlete—with his mom cheering from the sidelines all the while. \n“Iron Will” is the story of an athlete with an indomitable spirit and proof that a winner’s mindset is about more than physical and mental endurance. It’s about the unique places you can find love\, and the rewards of conquering your fears. \nIMPORTANT TICKETING AND EVENT INFORMATION\nTickets are $5 (plus a small processing fee).\nA coupon good for $5 off a copy of “Iron Will\,” or a purchase on the day of the event is included with your ticket. You will receive this coupon at the event.

SUMMARY:eTown Taping with Tyler Ramsey and Carl Broemel and Special Guest
DESCRIPTION:Tyler Ramsey & Carl Broemel are hitting the road for a special tour together\, celebrating the release of their new album Celestun. \nHaving been friends and occasional touring partners for well over a decade\, Asheville\, NC-based singer-songwriter-guitarist Tyler Ramsey and My Morning Jacket guitarist Carl Broemel have at long last made their full-length recorded debut with Celestun\, out January 15. \nA marvel of interwoven musicianship and testament to the duo’s singular camaraderie\, the album encapsulates the two veteran guitarist-songwriters’ mutual admiration and effortless compatibility as they swap and share nine new songs of dazzling dexterity and grace recorded almost entirely on acoustic guitars. \nThough their initial objective had been all instrumental\, the natural flow of the sessions led the duo to begin incorporating vocal tracks. Stark yet intricately arranged songs such as the cinematic title track\, “Flying Things” (featuring additional vocals from GRAMMY® Award-nominated singing siblings The Secret Sisters)\, and an incandescent version of Neil Young’s “Sail Away” are rich with dazzling dexterity and grace\, Tyler’s nimble fingerstyle picking and Carl’s classically trained virtuosity aligning to create a predominantly instrumental song cycle of rustic beauty and atmospheric power. Music at its most elemental\, Celestun sees Carl and Tyler stripping away artifice to unlock and explore deeply personal themes of wanderlust and familial love\, of fellowship and communal adventure. \n“We don’t step on each other’s toes\,” says Carl\, “we kind of fit together like puzzle pieces. Maybe that sounds grandiose\, but that’s how it feels to me when we’re playing. We don’t even have to talk about it.” \n“We just mesh together in a way that I can’t even really explain\,” says Tyler. “I feel like there’s some magical connection between our two things\, it just makes me smile and satisfies some itch as far as things that I would like to hear on the music that I write. I think he feels the same way about what I do. When I put a part to one of his songs\, we both have this feeling like that is what exactly what was missing.” \nPreviously\, Louisville\, KY’s Carl Broemel has released a series of solo recordings over the past two decades\, including 2019’s Brokenhearted Jubilee EP in collaboration with drummer Eric Hopper\, and recent collaborations with The Futurebirds. Meanwhile\, Tyler Ramsey\, has earned praise for his former role as songwriter and lead guitarist in Band of Horses as well as an evolving solo body of work that includes 2024’s acclaimed New Lost Ages\, hailed by Americana UK as “a gentle indie-folk gem.”

SUMMARY:MycoMorphosis: Dancing with Fungi
DESCRIPTION:MycoMorphosis: Dancing with Fungi is a multimedia Bio-Art project directed by choreographer Iván-Daniel Espinosa. Inspired by the underground networks of mycelium that connect the roots of thousands of plants and trees\, this live performance incorporates mycology and myco-sculpture with electroacoustic soundscapes and Japanese Butoh dance to bring to life the fascinating world of fungi in an immersive theatrical setting. For this performance\, Espinosa and his collaborators have designed a 10-foot tall maze-like sculpture made up of fungal colonies with fruiting mushrooms of different species. Musical soundscapes are created in real time by hooking up the fungi to bio-sensor and bio-sonification devices that convert the mycelium’s electrical and textural activity into Live sounds. The installation is further activated by dancers performing a choreography in the style of Japanese Butoh (舞踏\, Butō) inspired by the vibrant ecosystems of fungi and their shapeshifting movement through time and space. MycoMorphosis: Dancing with Fungi creates a multi-sensory and mind-bending experience that demonstrates a deeply intimate relationship to nature\, where the distinctions between human and non-human worlds disintegrate in slow and attentive bodily practice.

SUMMARY:eTown Presents Chatham Rabbits
DESCRIPTION:Sarah McCombie of the North Carolina duo Chatham Rabbits is ready for change. “I’m ready for our fans to get to know the people we are now. We’ve grown up together and getting to reveal this album feels like our collective coming of age.”\nThis declaration is coming from a woman who has spent the past six years building a robust catalog and passionate fanbase within the Americana community with her husband and bandmate Austin McCombie. A woman who knows there is more to the band’s story than vows\, banjos and vintage dresses. The duo has released three albums: All I Want from You(2019)\, The Yoke is Easy\, The Burden is Full (2020)\, If You See Me Riding By (2022) that nod to the old-time roots of their college stringband pastime\, but with their new release Be Real with Me (February 14\, 2025) they have grown up.\n“These past two years have totally changed us\,” describes Austin. “We’re not as bright-eyed and naive as we were when we committed to Chatham Rabbits full-time.” This honesty is the backbone of their fourth studio album. The title is the ask—or rather the plea—Be Real with Me.\nAs unified as ever\, being the McCombies\, Sarah and Austin have faced challenges within their marriage\, an overhaul of faith and belief systems\, a global pandemic\, three moves\, the loss of beloved family pets and the heartbreak that is unique to getting really real and brutally honest with each other. Austin’s once fair-freckled arms are now adorned with tattoos by artists he’s met on the road and natural elements that bring him joy. Sarah’s closet is still brimming with vintage pieces\, but she’s likely to reach for a slip dress at the moment instead.\nWith their forthcoming fourth release\, Sarah is excited for fans to hear the band’s forward momentum. The music speaks for itself.\nAs she explains\, “we got married so young. We are simply not the same people we once were because playing music for a living has consumed and transformed us. This lifestyle has presented us with exhausting tour schedules\, vulnerable songs that force us to talk about our marriage\, difficult business decisions and the ever-complicated dilemma of mixing art and money and friends and employees. Ultimately\, though\, it has been a net positive experience.”\nWritten post-pandemic by Sarah and Austin and recorded over a two-year period at The Studio at Small Pond Farm in Pittsboro\, NC\, Be Real with Me was co-produced by Austin and the band’s longtime collaborator Saman Khoujinian (The Dead Tongues\, Lou Hazel). This record is the band’s “Return of Saturn\,” an astrological phenomenon that occurs around the age of 29 when one reevaluates life and through trial and error figures out who and what one would like to commit to moving forward. This record is about doing your best and still failing\, facing the imposter in the mirror\, wanting to be reckless and young while simultaneously mature and maternal. “Matador\,” “Gas Money\,” “Did I Really Know Him?” and “Collateral Damage” speak to this sentiment directly\, particularly the latter that has Sarah grappling with her desire for motherhood and freedom on the road\, two goals in polar opposition to each other. That friction can be felt by the listener\, especially to someone who also wants two paths in life that are in constant conflict with one another.\n“We’ve never been a bluegrass band\, but being from NC we cannot ignore the regional influences all around us. We sampled organic tones and manipulated them into synth pads and percussive elements on this record. It feels like a natural progression because the foundational components of our music are still there\, we’ve just added to it\,” says Austin. On this album\, you’ll still hear the banjo (Sarah McCombie) but right along with it is a drum machine (Saman Khoujinian)\, synth (Saman Khoujinian) and pedal steel (Ryan Stigmon). But it’s the lyrics that show the most maturity.\nYou can hear the growth not only in the topics but in how the message is portrayed. As Sarah sings in “One Little Orange\,” a startlingly tender song about her relationship with her late grandfather\, “I just have to trust whatever I’ve been told.” And trust me\, dear reader\, these lyrics hit close to home with their precise word choices\, full-circle storytelling and universal themes of the human condition told by way of the songwriter’s specific life experience.\n“It makes me fired up to sing about my life and my discoveries. It’s so cathartic\,” shares Sarah as she reflects on the future. “There’s a place for ‘Abigail’ and ‘Bugle Boy\,’” she says\, recalling two of the duo’s earlier songs. “But the songs on Be Real with Me are representative of who we are today.”

Playing by the rules in a male-dominated game isn’t working—for anyone. \n“This Isn’t Working” inspires women to reexamine how we do business and shows there are much healthier\, more fulfilling ways to succeed in the business world that don’t require sacrificing ourselves.
