Boulder’s beloved tulip tradition is back! On Wednesday, August 20, the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department and the Downtown Boulder Partnership will host the 19th Annual Tulip Bulb Giveaway. Community members can pick up free bags of tulip bulbs from participating downtown businesses—one bag per household while supplies last.
Tulip bulbs will be available at 11 downtown Boulder businesses, including Ana’s Art Gallery, Bank of Colorado, Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery, OZO Coffee Roasters East & West, Park Cowork, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Savannah Bee Company, Savory Spice, Savvy on Pearl, and The New Local. It’s a first-come, first-served event, so arriving early is recommended.
This community giveaway began in 2006 and has become a favorite local tradition. Every year, about 15,000 tulip bulbs are imported from Holland to decorate Pearl Street Mall. Once the flowers fade, the bulbs are shared with the community to encourage residents to enjoy these blooms in their own gardens.
While the bulbs are free, donations to the PLAY Boulder Foundation are encouraged. The nonprofit helps support Boulder’s parks and recreation programs by funding educational opportunities, recreation projects, and community initiatives.
Tulips have been a staple of Pearl Street Mall since the 1970s, making them one of Boulder’s most recognizable and cherished features. This annual giveaway is more than just about flowers—it’s a way to celebrate the city’s beauty, connect with neighbors, and keep Boulder blooming year after year.
